Sri Lanka commandos kill four Tigers, recover weapons
Mar 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka elite Police Special Task Force commandos on a foot patrol killed four LTTE cadres in a confrontation and recovered weapons and explosives from Wellaweli, Batticaloa around 5.30 a.m. this morning, the Media Centre for National Security said.
Following the successful counter attack which has forced the LTTE cadres to flee the area, a search operation by the STF has recovered four bodies of Tigers along with a cache of weapons including a T-56 rifle, a claymore mine and detonators, hand grenades and a communication set.
Meanwhile, another 1091 people belonging to 257 families have entered the government controlled areas yesterday from the LTTE controlled areas of Kaththankuda, Periyaporathivu and Kanthimale swelling the total number of people arrived in cleared areas in Batticaloa to 60,287.
Government officials said over 155,000 people had been displaced in the district of Batticaloa in the past month. Security Forces are assisting the government in providing basic necessities to the IDPs upon their arrival.
