Sri Lanka Minister of Human Rights addresses the HRC today

Mar 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe is scheduled to address the fourth session of UN Human Rights Council which commences today in Geneva. He will explain the measures taken by the government regarding the human rights situation in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile New York based Human Rights Watch (HRW) together with other local and international human rights organizations are to moot a proposal to set up an International Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Sri Lanka.

Reports presented to the session by the special rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, Philip Alston, the UN representative for Children in Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour are expected to cover issues in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka government has appointed a presidential commission of inquiry to investigate some selected serious human rights violations that took place in the recent past.
